On My Way to Paradise is an exploration of the journey a kind and compassionate man living in Panama of being dragged into violence and losing his home.

Angelo is a morphogenic Pharmocologist who helps a desparate woman. As a result, he becomes a murderer and flees earth onto a ship bound for the planet Baker as a mercenary with other South Americans. They have been hired by a Japanese corporation to fight a war on Baker with their rivals.

While Angelo struggles with his morality, they are learning how to "be as one already dead", fighting in the simulators against samurai as training. Angelo watches as people who are already violent become indifferent and tries to understand his own preconceptions of what is good for his society, and what his society is now that he is part of the culture onboard.

The South Americans include chimeras, genetically upgraded humans with exaggerated territorialism, and Angelo's encounters with them challenge his ideas of humanity and compassion. Within his own small team there are tensions between the chimeras and the humans and understanding why leads him to believe that he has lost his capacity for compassion.

It is not until they fight the war on Baker that he finally understands himself and those around him
