Sherri S. Tepper's first book was The Revenants, but Ace Books decided it was too complex for a first novel, and instead published King's Blood Four, the first of her True Game series. Although classified as young adult, the true game series and her other YA novels are quite intriguing and deal subtly with adult themes.
Tepper drifted further toward the Science Fiction end of the spectrum as time went on, with novels such as Grass attracting the attention of the scifi community. She deals extensively with both feminist and environmental issues, notably in books like The Gate to Women's Country, a post-apocalyptic novel involving feminism and a severely damaged environment.
Although at times her proposed solutions can be simplistic, they are interesting ideas that are well worth exploring, and done very well indeed. Certainly an author to get hold of for good "what if" fiction involving social issues and potential outcomes.
