The Fulfilments of Fate and Desire is the final book in the first Wraeththu trilogy, and it is written from Cal's point of view. The mysterious and seductive harr who enchanted Pellaz and Terzian, who brings trouble with him when he comes.
This book fills in many of the gaps in the story of Cal, and his past, that were never explained in the earlier books. Cal spent years imprisoned by Theide, convinced by him that Pell wanted him in Immanion only as a diversion, a secret lover, not as his partner.
After being freed from the prison, Cal spends some time adventuring around, getting into trouble and sinking lower. At some point someone begins to manipulate his life, moving him toward cleansing and healing, and he suspects that it is Theide trying to force him to go to Immanion.
This book is as full of beauty and sensuality as the other two, but has a darker tone, perhaps because Cal is a darker character, or perhaps because it deals mostly with dark topics. The people, their tribes and differences, and the landscape encountered during Cal's journey is rich and vivid, leaving a sense of grandeur and wonder.
This is the perfect novel to sum up the trilogy, with characters who change and evolve, not just Cal, who is driven to, but also notably the beautiful Pantherine. A slave who is freed and then must overcome the effects of his captivity, Pantherine is appealing and vulnerable, yet strong and vigourous.
Overall a lovely and enriching story about love, in various forms.
