William Gibson forever changed the landscape of science fiction in 1984 when he published Neuromancer, the original cyberpunk novel. There are those who argue that it had been done to an extent before, but the truth is that Gibson did it most completely, most compellingly, he made cyberpunk real, and his books are unique.
Gibson shows the kind of forward thinking that is exhibited in very rare authors who seem to have an ability to look forward through time and see where technology is going, and who are later proved to be fairly close.
Gibson has a slick style, full of jargon and the rough perspective of characters who live on the edge, and he captures the dirty, glittering near future in a way that has a convinction and reality that is easy to believe in.
